Society’s Message
Both men and women fall prey to society’s messages about The Man Rules. Both sexes are victims of the unconscious absorption of the all-encompassing and ever-present gender role information provided by their environment. Society has a strong message regarding men and masculinity that is portrayed throughout a man’s lifespan, beginning as soon as his mind starts comprehending the provided messages. As a toddler, children start receiving societal messages via television. The messages continue through school, textbooks, cinema, video games, social clubs, social networks, sports, and many other diverse avenues.
Researchers Lorriane Evans, Ph.D, University of Georgia and Kimberly Davies Ph.D., Augusta State University conducted a study in which they examined the fictional characters within elementary school textbooks and discovered the male characters were consistently more aggressive, argumentative, and competitive. 64 What message is this sending to young readers about how their behavior depicts their masculinity? Children internalize the message that being tough, aggressive, argumentative, and competitive is the way to be male and how to display masculinity. Citing the work of Ellexis Boyle Ph.D, social researcher regarding media representations, and Sean Brayton Ph.D, researcher and expert of popular culture and film and television (2012), 65 and Jeffery A. Brown, Ph.D, researcher of gender and body issues in film, 66 Robert J. Zeglin, author of “Portrayals of Masculinity: Aging masculinities and ‘muscle work’ in Hollywood Action”, investigated masculinity within Hollywood movies and found it to be portrayed through labor capacity (a man’s ability to work), physicality and muscularity (physical condition), heterosexuality, a tough poise, and sadomasochistic themes (infliction of pain on others).
